My home network is more complicated than most. Two devices on it are a pair of Netgear switches. The GS608v2 connects to my PC, printer and spurs off to the Powerline kit and a second switch in the living room, a GS605v3. Having noticed that the NAS performance is a bit iffy and a few reports from the alerting system that the NAS drops out a could of times a day, I naturally ignored the problem.

Eventually of course, I decided to fix it.

Plug the NAS into the GS608v2 and packet loss is quite high from the PC on the same switch. Plug the NAS into the downstream switch via a different cable and the packet loss goes away. Mmm. Must be the cable.

Plug the new cable into the GS608v2 and the packet loss has gone.

How did the cable suddenly start causing a problem? Well new new cable is Cat5E. The old one is unmarked. Could just be that there is an interference source nearby that wasn’t there before. Could be that we have mice. Could be something else.

Task now is to leave the temporary cable dangling and watch for packet loss over the next few days.

Makes you realise just what a struggle it must be for the average home user now that there are so many Ethernet connected devices at home.

Then again, maybe it’s just me that has their TV plugged into the LAN?

Took the family out in the Landy. Had to charge the battery again to get it to start. Put half a tank of Diesel in it for £45 and then the seatbelt broke.Family had to sit thee whilst I got the spanners out. So much for going for a relaxing cuppa together.

Steering is also making a groaning noise at low speeds. Cheap month it won’t be.

Finally bit the bullet and ordered a Numax CXV-X 1000 battery from Tayna. Would like two really but can only stretch to one at the moment. Two batteries will need a split charge as well.

New battery has been a godsend. Starts first time, every time, no matter how cold it has got. I’m now officially ready for winter!

Seatbelt will come off eBay for about £30. Can’t avoid that either for safety, avoiding license points and to eventually pass the next MOT.

Steering is just going to have to grind for the moment.

• Sort the creak in the steering when dry steering left
• Fit a panel to the inside rear door
• fix the heater fan control
• tighten the throttle cable
• various bits of body rust
• change the rubber seal on drivers-site windscreen attachment
• Remove, weld and respray bull bars
• Remove, strip and repaint ladder
• Replace battery with potentially two in parallel or split-charge
• Win-top chequer plate
• Weld hole in rear cross-member
• Sound-proofing
• Left rear door lock a bit stiff
• Tidy rust on rear loading
• Decide if happy with gear box being a but vague and the occasional grind changing down to second
• Decide if replacing rubber door seals
• Find some way to fix all the loose tools etc. floating around in the boot to something solid
• Fit a new radio with CD player
• Decide best way to fix pirate flag pole
• Steering guards and diff-guards for potential green-laning etc.

Everything else can wait…..

I wrote a blog on my work website about IPv6 because I kept meeting customers with no clue about IPv6 but were worried about the hype.

Now that those in the know seem to have more of an act together, we are about to hit a different hurdle.

Most of the big networks (including mine) run dual-stack. This means any devices that need to see the “v6 Internet” are given an IPv6 address. There is nothing in the network for traditional IPv4 devices to see this new world, mainly because there are lots of approaches and no common standard. To be honest though, dual-stack is simplest to implement, understand and use.

The avaerage home broadband user on the other hand has an IPv4 address, behind a router that probably only does IPv4 into a network that most likley has IPv6 hidden in a corner. It is when these guys start feeling the pinch about address space that things will step-change.

There will be a land-grab for IPv4 addresses in the meantime as changing to IPv6 costs money. Keeping IPv4 doesn’t. Except for buying up any available IPv4 assets. When those prices start getting silly, economic principles dictate that IPv6 takes over.
