{"id":318,"date":"2009-02-02T11:29:27","date_gmt":"2009-02-02T11:29:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/simkin.org\/wordpress\/?p=314"},"modified":"2009-02-02T11:29:27","modified_gmt":"2009-02-02T11:29:27","slug":"recover-xp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/simkin.org\/wordpress\/?p=318","title":{"rendered":"Recovering Windows XP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After receiving a plea for help from a good friend whom due to a mishap with a Windows update and a kitten called &#8220;Marmite&#8221; had a broken Windows XP system, I thought I&#8217;d better let you know how to use the Recovery Console to get hold of your old Restore Points.<\/p>\n<p> <!--more--> <\/p>\n<p>Boot from the XP CD. <\/p>\n<p>Start Windows Setup and press R to access the recovery console. <br \/>Select your Windows installation (usually just press Enter).<br \/>Type the administrator password (usually just press Enter).<\/p>\n<p>Take a backup of your registry files (skip this if you did it earlier)<br \/>cd c:\\windows\\system32<br \/>md phuqd<br \/>cd phuqd<br \/>COPY C:\\Windows\\System32\\Config\\*.* .<\/p>\n<p>Now find your restore points: <br \/>CD C:\\<br \/>CD &#8220;system volume information&#8221;<br \/>CD _resto~1<br \/>DIR <\/p>\n<p>There is a folder for each Restore Point. They are called RP1, RP2 etc. Note the dates to find the most recent one. <br \/>Pick the restore point you want to try and recover, for example, RP1:<\/p>\n<p>CD RP1<br \/>CD SNAPSHOT <br \/>COPY _Registry_machine_system C:\\Windows\\System32\\Config\\System<br \/>COPY _Registry_machine_software C:\\Windows\\System32\\Config\\Software<br \/>COPY _Registry_machine_sam C:\\Windows\\System32\\Config\\Sam<br \/>COPY _Registry_machine_security C:\\Windows\\System32\\Config\\Security<br \/>COPY _Registry_user_.default C:\\Windows\\System32\\Config\\Default <\/p>\n<p>Type the command exit to close the Recovery Console and restart the PC. <br \/>With luck all is now well.
